Fool in the Rain

'Fool in the Rain' is a 1979 song by English rock band Led Zeppelin. The song was composed by Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones, and recorded at Polar Studios, Stockholm, Sweden in November 1978, and mixed at Plumpton Studio, East Sussex, in December 1978. It appeared as the third track on Led Zeppelin's 1979 album In Through the Out Door, released on 15 August 1979. 'Fool in the Rain' was also issued as a promotional single in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Ecuador, Uruguay, and Japan. It reached number 21 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart, and number 12 on the Canadian RPM Singles chart. 'Fool in the Rain' is a shuffling Latin rock song which breaks into a samba rhythm, inspired by the theme music of the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina.

Overview

'Fool in the Rain' was rehearsed in a number of different styles at Polar Studio, with singer Robert Plant selecting the best version to record. The band members blew tin whistles in the style of a South American football match crowd. Drummer John Bonham recorded his drums in two sessions, with the first session as a shuffling half-time beat followed by a second session with a samba breakdown. Keyboardist John Paul Jones played Polar Studios Steinway piano in a smooth jazz fashion, while guitarist Jimmy Page used a standard six string electric and a 12 string guitar. An MXR Blue Box effect pedal was used to create the fuzz toned octave sounds during the guitar solo. The lyrics by Plant concern a man who is supposed to meet a woman on a certain corner but is stood up, and then realises all along he was a fool in the rain.

Live performances
